Diving Company in Stavanger – UWILD, Hull Inspection and Underwater Repairs

Ships calling at Stavanger, Risavika, Tananger, Dusavik or Mekjarvik can have their underwater survey, hull work and repairs done while they lie alongside. Kristiansand Bygg AS sends divers, a dive boat and our own ROV to the berth, so the vessel keeps to its port schedule instead of going to dock.

Our nearest base is in Flekkefjord, on the E39 coast road towards Rogaland. From there a fast dive boat and a mobile equipment rig cover the Stavanger region, backed up by our main base in Kristiansand.

DNV-approved in-water survey

Kristiansand Bygg AS is a DNV Approved Service Supplier for in-water survey (IWS) and UWILD, using both divers and ROV, in line with DNV-CP-0628. Our certificate number is AOSS0000S13 and it runs until 2029.

Before the dive, the scope is settled with the classification society's surveyor. The surveyor does not need to be on the quay: a live two-way video link lets them watch, ask for close-ups and give instructions from their own office. We dive and inspect down to 50 m.

Hull, propeller and sea chest inspection

Many owners and managers want an inspection outside the class cycle as well: after a grounding or contact, before buying a ship, when fuel figures drift upwards, or ahead of a planned docking. We record what we find on video and stills and hand it over in a written report that can go straight to the superintendent.

  • Shell plating, flat bottom and bilge keels
  • Propeller blades, propeller nozzles and rudder
  • Sea chests, gratings and other hull openings
  • Thruster tunnels and anodes

More on methods and reporting: underwater inspections.

Hull cleaning and propeller polishing

A rough hull and a fouled propeller cost speed and fuel. The cleaning method is picked after the inspection, with the coating system and the kind of growth in mind, so that the antifouling is not damaged more than necessary. Cleaning is only done where port and environmental rules allow it.

  • Hull cleaning on bottom, sides and rudder
  • Niche areas: sea chests, gratings and thruster tunnels
  • Propeller polishing on the blades and hub

Underwater repairs

If the inspection turns up a problem, the same team can often deal with it before the ship sails. Our divers are trained craftsmen, which matters when a repair has to hold until the next docking.

  • Thrusters: inspection, cleaning and repair
  • Sea chests and other underwater openings
  • PBCF (Propeller Boss Cap Fins): inspection and installation afloat
  • Quay and berth inspection for port owners

Ports we cover in the Stavanger area

  • Stavanger port and Byfjorden – city quays and anchorages in the fjord
  • Risavika and Tananger – the harbour and supply base area on the Sola side
  • Dusavik and Mekjarvik – the base and terminal area north of the city

The location of the berth decides whether we work from the quay with the mobile rig or from the dive boat.

Getting to Stavanger: E39 and boat

Two routes, depending on the job:

  • By road: the mobile equipment rig drives the E39 from Flekkefjord. On quays with road access we can also set up a mobile land-based dive station next to the ship.
  • By sea: the fast dive boat runs up the coast and works directly at the hull, which suits anchorages and berths that are hard to reach by land.

Teams can be on the way within the hour from Kristiansand or Flekkefjord. Call +47 902 03 797 if the ship is already in port.

Selected references from other Norwegian ports

These jobs were done outside Rogaland. They are listed to show the type of work we carry out, not as work in the Stavanger area.

  • Gearbulk, M/V Misago Arrow (Grenland, Telemark): PBCF inspection and installation done afloat, with no drydocking.
  • Eramet quay, Porsgrunn (Telemark): removal of an old quay structure, cut with vibration-free wire sawing.
  • Mo i Rana (Nordland): emergency salvage of a sunken barge and excavator at the new deep-water quay, for Rana municipality and the Norwegian Coastal Administration (Kystverket).

FAQ

Can the in-water survey be done while the ship is at the quay in Stavanger?

Yes. We can inspect at the berth where the ship is already lying, or from our dive boat if it is at anchor. The scope is agreed with the class surveyor beforehand.

Which ports in the Stavanger area do you work in?

Stavanger port and Byfjorden, Risavika and Tananger, and Dusavik and Mekjarvik.

How do you get to Stavanger?

Our mobile equipment rig comes by road along the E39 from Flekkefjord, and our fast dive boat comes by sea. Teams can be on the way within the hour from Kristiansand or Flekkefjord.

What is your DNV approval?

Kristiansand Bygg AS is approved by DNV as a service supplier for in-water survey and UWILD with divers and ROV, under DNV-CP-0628. Certificate AOSS0000S13 is valid until 2029.

When do you use the ROV instead of divers?

Our PIVOT ROV is used where access is difficult or a diver is not needed. It has a 300 m tether and a manipulator arm. Divers work down to 50 m.

Have you worked on ships in the Stavanger area before?

Yes. We have carried out ship work in the Rogaland area. We do not publish client or vessel names without the owner's permission. Named references from other Norwegian ports are listed above.
